The New Industrial Chic
The shuttered 130,000 square foot industrial complex – languishing in weeds and neglect — was home to the now defunct Marathon Motor Works when urban visionary Barry Walker recognized its potential and bought it in 1986. Since then, Walker has overseen development of Marathon Village into a four-block conclave of artists’ and photographers’ studios, offices, a radio station and a thriving retail environment.
Built between 1881 and 1912, the different buildings each involve their own distinct architecture, creating lovingly restored spaces that are truly unique. Best described as a “Southern Soho”, Marathon Village houses some of Nashville’s most eclectic, one-of-a-kind retailers. True to his word, Barry Walker has kept his promise of keeping rents low to attract entrepreneurial businesses and the creative design community.
